Here are the horses coming in for another race. Each race had different criteria for what horses could run. For example, one was a "$4000 claiming race". That means, any registered horse owner could "claim" (buy) any horse in that race for $4000. Hence, nobody would run a $10,000 horse in such a race--thus the horses tend to be nearly equal in ability, making for a better race.
