Student housing. Students pay 1800 yuan, about $240, per year to live here. It is so cheap because it is subsidized. There are many universities in Beijing and the students who live here do not all attend the same university. I was told, though, that "the university" subsidizes the housing. The students pay 5000 yuan (about $625) per year in tuition and fees. However, only about ten percent of Chinese high school students can go to the university. There are nationwide competitive examinations to determine which ten percent will go.
